Every Day In Every Way…

The French psychologist Émile Coué developed the Coué Method,  a tactic of self-suggestion characterized by a mantra, “Every day in every way, I’m getting better and better.”, to be repeated daily multiple times as a means to self-improvement.

Taking some inspiration from the idea without commentary on the efficacy of the method I would like to suggest that something similar can be attempted with photography. Personally, I try to apply my full powers to all my photography. I don’t differentiate between professional work and personal artistic work, or snapshots with my loved ones on vacation.

To my mind photography is something I do, every time I have the camera in my hand I should be trying to achieve the best image. My goal is to always be working with the ease that comes with long practice, applying what I have learned about photography almost subconsciously. Eventually, if I work at it long enough craft and art will become the same thing whether I’m following a client’s directive, or photographing my niece’s birthday party.

There is no shame in making every moment a moment of artistry. There is no shame in finding the exceptional in the most commonplace moments and things. An overwhelming part of leading an enjoyable life is the vantage point you observe from. I choose to opt for a life that finds the art in the everyday.

Ruby Beach No. 3

The last of the images from my last outing to Ruby Beach. The skies were not as dramatic as I’d have liked but I do like the images on the whole. Further, there is something almost meditative about landscape photography; the necessity to slow down and take all the considerations of the scene to account including composition and light.

Many of the prints appearing in these posts are available for purchase here and here.

Ruby Beach No. 2

A continuation of images from my most recent trip to Ruby Beach. Interestingly, I wasn’t the only photographer present that brisk morning. We both went about our endeavors, respectfully avoiding spoiling each others shots, intent on our work.

More tomorrow.

Ruby Beach No. 1

Ruby Beach along the coast of the Pacific Northwest is a great place not only to photography but to just take in nature. It’s a bit of a trek for me taking pretty much a work day’s worth of travel (combined there and back), but I still manage to go a few times a year.

Many of these prints are available for purchase here. Ya know, for the interested.

More tomorrow, and possibly the next.

Punalu’u Beach (black sand beach)

Yesterday saw us hitting the road to explore a novelty of the island; Punalu’u Beach, singularly noted for the features of its black sand and the presence of Green Sea Turtles. Unfortunately, the turtles did not make an appearance during our time there.

Kailua-Kona: First Impressions

Hawaii is considered a dream destination for many and occupies a place of prominence in the idea many have of what constitutes paradise.

I’m currently on the “Big Island” and I have to say its reputation for beauty is well-deserved. As expected I am tempted to capture photographically the impressions the place makes on me.

Last week saw a journey north-westward to Olympic National Park here in the Pacific Northwest. I’ve mentioned before how I have very little affinity for the landscape and I hope to rectify that. There’s very little excuse not to as I have any number of scenic options barred only by the willingness to get up and go. I choose the Olympic National Park over Mt. Rainier or another spot given the variety the park offers.

The climate has been very cooperative here recently which helped. I traveled light, carrying only the Fuji X10 & X30. Strictly speaking not a landscape-centric setup but I my goal was to learn how to “see” the landscape and for that coupled with the expected heat of the day lightweight was the way to go.

My itinerary was to include Ruby Beach and the Hoh Rainforest. I’ve chosen to split the posts up a bit.
